Abstract:
Cyclobutane compounds (I) are new. Cyclobutane compounds of formula (I) are new: R1, R2 = H, F, Cl, Br, I, optionally chiral 1-15C alkyl or alkoxy optionally substituted by halo and having CH2 groups replaced by -O-, -S-, -CO-, -COO-, -O-CO-O-, -CH=CH-, -CH=CF-, -CF=CF-, -C triple bond C- or 1,4-cyclobutyl such that heteroatoms are not directly bonded to each other, -CN-, -SCN, -NCS, -SF5, -SCF3, -CF3, -CF=CF2, -CF2CF2CF3, -OCF3, -OCHF2, -CF2CH2CF3 or -OCH2CF2CHFCF3; A = trans-1,4-cyclohexylene optionally having non-neighboring CH2 groups replaced by -O- and/or -S - and optionally substituted by F; 1,4-phenylene optionally having one or two CH groups replaced by N and substituted by halo, -CN, -CH3, -CHF2, CH2F, -OCH3, -OCHF2 or OCF3; bicyclo(1.1.1)pentan-1,3-diyl, bicyclo(2.2.2)-octan-1,4-diyl, spiro(3.3)heptan-2,6-diyl, naphthalen-2,6-diyl, decahydronaphthalen-2,6-diyl, 1,2,3,4-tetrahydronaphthalen-2,6-diyl, piperidin-1,4-diyl or 1,4-cyclohexylene; Z = -O-, -CH2O-, -CO-O-, -CF2O-, -CF2CF2-, -CH2CH2-, -CH=CH-, -CH=CF-, -CF=CF-, -CF=CF-COO-, -C triple bond C- or a single bond; m, n = 0-2; and o = 0 or 1. Independent claims are also included for: (1) use of cyclobutane compounds (I) as a component in liquid crystal media; (2) liquid crystal display element comprising (I); and (3) electro-optical display element comprising (I) as dielectric in liquid crystal medium.
