To provide an industrially applicable method for producing a compound with a diacyloxylated side chain of an alkyl-substituted aromatic compound in good productivity.
An alkyl-substituted aromatic compound is allowed to react with a carboxylic acid and/or a carboxylic anhydride in the absence of a cobalt compound and a manganese compound by using a cerium compound soluble in a reaction liquid as a catalyst in the presence of an oxygen-containing gas to provide the objective compound with a diacyloxylated side chain of the alkyl-substituted aromatic compound in the method for producing a compound with the diacyloxylated side chain of the alkyl-substituted aromatic compound. Preferably, the alkyl-substituted aromatic compound is a methyl-substituted aromatic compound, and the methyl-substituted aromatic compound is m- phenoxytoluene, m-cyanotoluene or m-chlorotoluene.
