NEW MATERIAL:A compound of formula I (R1 is lower alkoxyalkyl or lower alkylthioalkyl; R and R2 are H or lower alkyl).
EXAMPLE: Ethoxymethyl O-methoxycarbonylmethyl-5- (2-chloro-4-trifluoro- methylphexy)-2-nitrobenzohydroximate.
USE: A herbicide. The compound exhibits a strong herbicidal activity against weeds in paddy fields, upland fields, orchards, mulberry fields, etc., and has selectivity to cultivated crops such as rice or corn.
PREPARATION: The compound of formula I is prepared by reacting an O- substituted-2-nitro-5-(substituted phenoxy)benzhydroxamic acid derivative of formula II [X is halogen or -OS2R' (R' is (substituted)alkyl, phenyl, etc.)] with a halogen compound of formula III, e.g., in a solvent such as methanol in the presence of a base such as pyridine or NaOH.
