Abstract:
PURPOSE:To surely read a defect list in every case by controlling the reading of the defect list according to the contents of the flag byte of an identification label. CONSTITUTION:A disk controller 22 receives a command for reading the defect list from a host CPU 21, makes a magnetic disk unit 23 execute a seeking operation for a cylinder on which the defect list is written, selects a specific head, and starts another operation for reading the defect list written on the track. At this time, for the format of the defect list of media defined by ESDI standard, the flag byte of an identification label part is checked, and it is controlled whether the defect list at a data part is to be read with 256 bytes or the defect list is to be read with 512 bytes by a microprogram on the disk controller according to the contents of the flag byte. Thus, the defect list can be read in every case.
