PURPOSE: To improve display function by controlling a transistor for discharging/ charging a capacitor based on an emission signal, and emission by means of discharge voltage.
CONSTITUTION: Quartz or glass plate is used for a substrate 1 which is to be a support body of an organic field emission element. A positive electrode 2 consisting of metal such as gold, silver and platinum, metal, oxide such as the oxide of indium/tin, and conductive high polymer, is provided on the substrate 1. Hydrazone compound or silazane compound, etc., is used for a hole transfer layer 3 on the positive electrode. Aromatic compound such as tetraphenylbutadiene, perylene dielectric, or naphthylidine dielectric, etc., is used for an emission layer 4. A metal of low work function is preferred for the positive electrode 5 for injecting electron into the layer 4. An active matrix circuit between a TFT and a capacitor is provided on the same substrate as the organic field emission element, and the pulse width of a source signal is made to be variable in relation to the pulse width of the gate signal of a first TFT, and excellent display function can thus be achieved.
