In the eddy current cylinder for a retarder of such constitution that it gets braking torque by relatively rotating a plurality of magnetic poles, where N poles and S poles are arranged alternately and an eddy current cylinder 20 provided in a position opposed to the magnetic poles thereby generating an eddy current in the cylinder 20, the cylinder 20 is provided with a continuous winding core 22 of magnetic material whose one side edge is provided with a fin part 23 of formation of a fin 21 for heat radiation and whose other side edge is straight and which is curved continuously in a circle, with the straight side edge inward, and which forms a cylinder when the specified number of layers are stacked, and a short circuit means which is provided in the axial direction of the cylinder at the inside periphery of the stacked winding core 22 so as to let an eddy current generated in the winding core 22 flow.
