NEW MATERIAL: A compd. represented by formula I [wherein R1 is H, a halogen, CN or CF3, R2, R4 and R5 are H or a halogen, R3 is a halogen, CN, CF3, trifluoromethoxy or trifluoromethylsulfonyl, X is a halogen, Y is a halogen, CN, azido, thiocyanato, cyanamino, a group represented by formula II (wherein R6 is CN, carbonyl or an alkylcarbonyl or R7 is H or an alkyl) or a group represented by formula III (wherein R10 is H, an alkyl or benzyl and R11 is OH, an alkoxy or phenyl)].
EXAMPLE: Diethyl 2-chloro-5-(2,6-dichloro-3-fluoro-4-trifluoromethyl-phenoxy)- benzylmalonate.
USE: A defoliant, a desicant, a destruction agent of a broadleaf tree and, especially, a herbicide.
PROCESS: For example, a halogen substituted phenoxytoluene derivative represented by formula V is reacted with a halogenating agent and further reacted with a compd. represented by the formula; M-Y (M is H or metal equivalent) if necessary to obtain the compd. represented by the formula I.
