PURPOSE: To obtain a roll for rolling free from deterioration in hardness and having high toughness by specifying a composition consisting of C, Mn, Cr, Mo, Ni, and Fe and also controlling the content of Si as an inevitable impurity.

CONSTITUTION: A high-toughness roll for rolling can be obtained by providing a composition which consists of, by weight, 0.45W0.95% C, ≤1.0% Mn, 4.5W6.0% Cr, 0.3W0.8% Mo, 0.6W2.0% Ni, and the balance Fe with inevitable impurities and further contains, if necessary, 0.1W0.3% V and in which the content of Si as an inevitable impurity is controlled to <0.1%. In the above roll, high toughness is provided by regulating a chemical composition without causing deterioration in hardness directly affecting characteristics, such as wear resistance and spalling resistance. Moreover, by forming the above roll by applying the powder of an alloy with the above composition to the roll surface by means of powder plasma cladding by welding, effects equal to those of an integrated body can be produced.
