PURPOSE: To allow the user to confirm a content of an original of a page succeeding to a page of current reading while characters are stopped on the display.

CONSTITUTION: An operation section 21 selects a 2-page display mode, then image data by two pages are read from an image memory 12 under the control of a CPU 19 and an original image by two pages is displayed on a screen of a prompter display section in a spread state. Furthermore, a succeeding page is displayed in an update way for each one page by a page turn-over operation button and the original of the updated page is displayed at a position of a page to be erased. Moreover, the page turn-over is made by automatic reading through the use of an audio signal by detecting whether or not a current original position exceeds a page update setting position.
