To improve durability of a scanner motor and form images of high quality by lowering the rotational speed of the scanner motor in the non-writing region.
A means which measures exposure on a photosensitive drum is provided in a recording section to control the scanner motor by a control section so that the rotational speed of the scanner motor is reduced in accordance with the quantity of exposure measured by this means. In this case, the driving of the scanner motor is started at. step S1. At step S2, it is judged whether the exposure of the measured image is a specified value or not. When yes, operation is advanced to step S3; otherwise to step S4. At step S3, the rotational speed of the scanner motor is controlled to be lowered. When image formation is finished at step S4, the action of the scanner motor is stopped at step S5. When image formation is not finished, step S1 is restored.
