A person as a candidate for the object to be chased is extracted from a photographic image by face detection. When there are a plurality of candidates for the object to be chased, one of them is selected as an object to be chased by external operation or face recognition processing. Chasing parameters needed for automatic chasing are automatically set based upon the size, position, direction, and inclination of the face of the person to be chased and the inclination of an imaging device, and the automatic chasing is carried out according to the chasing parameters. The whole photographic image and an enlarged image of the object to be chased are displayed on a display screen 50, and further a chased object frame 64 is displayed in a display area AR1 for the whole image. When the object to be chased is framed out, a direction wherein the object to be chased is positioned is estimated based upon a movement track of the object to be chased, and the estimated direction is displayed on the display screen.
