PURPOSE: To obtain an indane compd. which is useful as herbicides and is more particularly usable as selective herbicides for beets, corn and wheat by bringing specific two kinds compds. into reaction.
CONSTITUTION: A compd. of, for example, formula I {W is O, NR1 (R1 is H, a lower alkyl); A is formula II, formula III; B is formula III [R2 is H, CR6R7×R8 (R6, R7 are each H, a substd. alkyl, etc.; R8 is CN, CSNH2, etc.; X is COCH2, CH=CH, etc.)]}, formula IV (CR3R4 is CH-R6R7×R8, etc.); -A-B- is formula II, formula III', etc.] and a compd. of the formula Ar-Z (Ar is a substd. aryl or a heterocyclic ring system, Z is an eliminable group) are brought into reaction at 20 to 150°C in a solvent, such as DMF, in the presence of a base, such as sodium hydride, by which the objective compd. of formula V is obtd. The compd. of formula V is, for example, (RS)-6-(2-chloro-6-fluoro-4- trifluoromethylphenoxy)indan-1-yl acetic acid.
