To provide an inverter system having a large braking torque, i.e. high braking performance, under conditions that a motor loss is large but a dc voltage does not become excessive at braking, while the inverter system is designed to suppress the motor loss at power running.
The inverter system includes dc power supply 5 which generates the dc voltage from ac power supply 1, an inverter circuit 6 which outputs ac power supply of a frequency different from the ac power supply 1 from the dc power supply 5, and a motor 7 which receives an output of the inverter circuit 6. In a current waveform at braking between the inverter circuit 6 and the motor 7, its distortion is made larger than that at the power running, so that the loss in the motor 7 at braking can be increased, and the large braking torque can be obtained under the condition that an overvoltage of the dc power supply 5 is not generated.
