PURPOSE: To make the operation without malfunction posible with high accuracy by reading position information before resetting with storage information when the peak of a focus voltage is not found out so as to return a lens.

CONSTITUTION: A focus voltage outputted from a band pass filter 122, that is, a level of a high frequency component is given to a capacitor 141, in which peak hold value is detected and the result is fetched to a control microcomputer 124, in which a peak hold level in the preceding processing is compared with the fetched value and a count is stored. When a focus compensation lens is positioned at a focus position and the focus position is discriminated, the lens is returned to a lens position just before resetting. That is, in this case, an absolute position of a focus lens is obtained by taking a reset position measured from an origin as a reference and stored in the memory, the lens is restored to the initial position by moving the focus compensation lens till the count is equal to the value stored in the memory.
