PURPOSE: To obtain a new liquid crystal compound having the properties as a chiral dopant at the same time, excellent in temperature dependence of a pitch, arbitrarily adjustable of a pitch length and a spiral direction and useful as an electrooptical display material.
CONSTITUTION: This is a liquid crystal compound, bound to a deuterium atom and having an optically active carbon atom, such as a liquid crystal compound of the formula (R1 and R2 are each independently H, cyano, a halogen, a 1-20C alkyl, etc.; Z1 to Z3 are each independently a covalent bond, a 1-4C alkylene, etc.; n1 and n2 are each 0, 1; the ring A to the ring D are each independently a benzene ring, a bicyclo[1.1.1]pentane ring, etc.; H on at least one ring out of R1, R2, Z1 to Z3 and the ring A to the ring D is substituted with D, and the C-atom bound to the D is an asymmetric carbon atom and optically active), e.g. (+)-trans-4-(trans-4-n-propylcyclohexyl)-1-(3-D-pentyl)cyclohexane. A compound of the formula is produced e.g. by the optical resolution of a corresponding synthetic precursor.
