PURPOSE: To obtain a liquid crystal material with wide structural variation and especially with a temp. range where there is a possibility of exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase wider than before, which comprises a compd. with a specified structure.
CONSTITUTION: A liquid crystal material consisting of a compd. with a structure of formula I (wherein X and Y are formulas II, III, IV, V, VI, etc., or substd. compd. thereof; V and W are each a single bond or O, formulas VII, VIII, IX, etc.; R and R' are each an alkyl; (m) and (n) are each 0 or 1). It has wide structural variations and especially a temp. range where there is a possibility of exhibiting a chiral smectic C phase becomes wider than that for conventional ones. In addition, as a spontaneous polarization is large as a ferroelectric liquid crystal and a range of a tilting angle is also wide, if a ferroelectric liquid crystal compsn. is prepd. by using this liquid crystal material, it is possible to provide a display, etc., wherein a temp. range of the chiral smectic C phase, namely, a working temp. range is wide and a response speed is large at low electric voltage.
