Title:
LIQUID CRYSTAL OPTICAL MODULATOR
Document Type and Number:
Japanese Patent JPS6442631
Kind Code:
A
Abstract:
PURPOSE:To improve the efficiency of utilizing a light source by forming patterns irregularly and controlling the refractive indices of the liquid crystals in the respective pattern regions, thereby making optical modulation. CONSTITUTION:The distance between the patterns apart at the spacing between non-electrode parts in the pattern distribution of the non-electrode parts 17, 27 consisting of the approximately circular patterns is set at >=0.5mum and <=10mum. The upper and lower substrates having the irregular non-electrode part patterns are superposed and a voltage above the threshold characteristic is impressed by a power supply 19 to this liquid crystal cell by turning a switch 18 on. Then, the parts where transparent conductive films 13, 23 face each other and the parts where there is just one of said films are dispersed irregularly in this cell and, therefore, the parts where the electric fields in the cell are impressed perpendicularly to the planes of the substrates 11 and 21 and the parts where the electric fields are diagonally impressed thereto co-exist irregularly. The efficiency of utilizing not only the specific polarization component but also the incident light is enhanced and since the wavelengths are not deviated to the specific wavelength only, the colorless display is obtd. and the fluctuation in the colors in production stage is prevented simultaneously.
