PURPOSE: To obtain new liq.-crystalline compd. each having a high dielectric anisotropy and a low viscosity, capable of rapidly switching even at a low temp. and useful as an electro-optical display element.
CONSTITUTION: The liq.-crystalline compds. are compds. of the formulae Z1-(X1- R1-Y-M)m and Z2-(X2-R1-Y-M)m [where Z1 is the radical of an m-valent alcohol, the alcoholate residue of carboxylic acid, the residue of an acid, etc.; Z2 is n-valent benzene, etc.; X1 is a chemical bond or CO; X2 is O, S or CO-O; Y is a chemical bond, O, S, CO-O, etc.; R1 is a 2-20C bridge; M is a mesogenic group having a dielectric anisotropy of ≥0.3; (m) is 3-6; (n) is 3-6], e.g. pentaerythrite-tetra-(W-(4'-cyanobiphenyl-4-oxy)-pentylcarboxylate. Each of the compds. is obtd. by allowing a carboxylic acid of the formula M-Y-R1-COOH to react with thionyl chloride in the presence of DMF and allowing the resultant acid chloride of the formula M-Y-R1-CO-Cl to react with an alcohol of the formula Z1(OH)m in the presence of pyridine.
