To provide a maintenance and inspection system and a maintenance and inspection method, being flexibly applicable to the change in working items and allowing easy restoration of a maintenance and inspection robot to original automatic operation after switching over from the automatic operation into remote control.
The maintenance and inspection system comprises a plurality of tags 10 on which read data is recorded, a maintenance and inspection working route 11 having the IC tags in discrete arrangement, and the maintenance and inspection robot 12 for reading the read data from the IC tags while being moved along the maintenance and inspection route and for acting in accordance with working instructions. For example, an installation orientation of the IC tag to be read next time is recorded on the IC tag, and when an operator moves the maintenance and inspection robot to the installation position of the IC tag with remote control for restoring it the automatic operation, the maintenance and inspection robot automatically changes its direction to be detected by an absolute orientation detecting means corresponding to the orientation read from the IC tag.
