To provide a manual type planer having a driving unit which can more smoothly cut a material to be machined by less labor, and in addition, can further reduce the capacity of the driving unit.

A planer blade 3 is fitted horizontally movably in the lateral direction which is the perpendicular direction to the longitudinal direction (planning direction) of a planer base 1. The planer blade 3 is reciprocatingly moved in the lateral direction by a prescribed stroke by the driving unit 5 such as a motor, and the cutting sharpness of the planer blade 3 is raised. Thus, a resistance to the force when planning is performed is greatly reduced, and the smooth cutting in the longitudinal direction is made possible. On both ends of a cutting blade 3a on the lower end of the planer blade 3, a cutting blade 3b in the lateral direction is installed, and a slide cutting in the lateral direction is made smoother, and the cutting in the longitudinal direction is made further smoother.
