PURPOSE: To efficiently produce a high quality substrate for a information recording medium by introducing the edge part of a molten resin sheet into groove parts formed on the surfaces of a roll and a roll stamper when a molten resin sheet is introduced into the gap between the roll stamper and the roll.

CONSTITUTION: A molten resin from an extruder 6 is formed into a molten resin sheet 4 by a T-die 5, and the obtained sheet 4 is rolled between a roll 1 and a roll stamper 2 in which a flexible stamper 9 is fixed on the surface and then cooled by a roll 3. In this way, a preformat pattern 7 on the surface of the roll stamper is transferred to the sheet 4. In this process, the distance h1 of the gap 24 between the surface of the roll 1 and the preformat-forming surface of the roll stamper 2 is regulated by a gap regulation means 21, and the end of the sheet 4 is introduced into groove parts 23-1, 23-2 formed on the surface of the roll 1 so that the birefringence of the end is stabilized.
