Abstract:

To provide an industrially effective manufacturing method for 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzyl cyanide, whereby bis(chloromethyl) ether remaining in a solution after the completion of reaction is perfectly removed to an undetectable level, preventing the decomposition of produced 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzyl chloride; and trifluoromethoxybenzene is easily recovered without producing a waste solvent.

The method for manufacturing 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzyl cyanide comprises chloromethylating trifluoromethoxybenzene of formula (2), removing by-produced bis(chloromethyl) ether by treating an aqueous ammonium chloride solution after the completion of the chloromethylation to obtain 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzyl chloride of formula (3), and then subjecting 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzyl chloride to a cyanation to give 4-(trifluoromethoxy)benzyl cyanide of formula (1). Preferably, no organic solvent is used in the treatment during the reaction and after the completion of the reaction in both the chloromethylation and the cyanation.
