To provide a method of manufacturing a cutting insert formed of surface-coated TiCN based cermet which has improved chipping resistance and crack resistance and can maintain the finished surface accuracy of a cut material over a long period.
After the predetermined-shape cutting insert formed of the TiCN based cermet is produced by molding and sintering material powder, wet blast treatment is applied to the surface thereof for imparting a residual compression stress of 450-1,000 MPa to a hard phase of the surface part of the insert and at the same time smoothing the surface roughness of the insert to be 0.2 μm or smaller in arithmetical mean roughness Ra at a cut-off value of 0.08 mm, and a hard coated layer is formed on the surface with vapor deposition in a physical vapor deposition method. Thus, the cutting insert formed of the surface-coated TiCN based cermet is manufactured which has improved chipping resistance and crack resistance and can maintain the finished surface accuracy of the cut material over a long period.
