To provide a method for producing a carboxylic acid or a carboxylic acid anhydride by which the same level as that of a conventional rate of reaction can be maintained, the formation of by-products other than the objective product can be suppressed and the decomposition rate of a catalyst can be suppressed to prolong the catalyst life.
This method for producing the carboxylic acid and the carboxylic acid anhydride comprises carrying out carbonylating reaction of a raw material to be carbonylated with carbon monoxide in the presence of a fixed catalyst for the carbonylating reaction and an alkyl iodide in a reactional solvent. The fixed catalyst for the carbonylating reaction is a solid catalyst for the carbonylating reaction produced by using a resin carrier having a porous cross linked structure containing a nitrogen-containing ring and a salt of a group VIII metal and the amount of the group VIII metal supported on the resin carrier is 1.0-10.0 wt.%. The method for the production is carried out in a reactor of a flow system and the temperature of a reactor is set at ≤160°C. The water concentration at the outlet of the reactor is set so as to satisfy 0.3 wt.%≤H2O≤10 wt.%.
