PURPOSE: To keep a high rare gas refining capacity over a long period by integrally forming a hydrogenated and dehydrogenated hydrogen absorbing alloy with other metals and ceramics and bringing the formed body into contact with a raw rare gas.
CONSTITUTION: The pelletized body 2 consisting of a hydrogen absorbing alloy (e.g. TiMn1.5 alloy) and the powder of metallic ceramic (e.g. copper) are charged to a stainless-steel vessel 1. The vessel 1 is heated to about 200°C by a heater 4 and evacuated, gaseous hydrogen at room temp. and about 30 atm is then introduced into the vessel, and the TiMn 1.5 alloy is initially hydrogenated. The vessel 1 is then evacuated at room temp. to dehydrogenate the alloy. The hydrogenation and dehydrogenation are repeated several times, the vessel 1 is heated to about 200°C, and dehydrogenation is applied by a vacuum pump. The preparation as an adsorbent is completed by the treatment, gaseous Ar is used as a rare gas, the vessel 1 is held at about 200°C, and the rare gas (e.g. Ar) is refined. Namely, the raw gaseous Ar is continuously introduced into the vessel 1 from the lower gas port, and the obtained refined Ar is collected from the upper gas port.
