To shorten the time required for conducting a process for decomposing gum which exists in bast and adheres bast fibers to one another by soaking the bast in a bast plant, such as kenaf and jute, in an aqueous solution, when compared with those required in conventional techniques.
A method for separating the bast fibers conducts a press process for pressing the blast fibers, before the process for decomposing the gum which exists in the bast and adheres the bast fibers to one another is conducted by soaking the bast in the aqueous solution. Thus, the blast fibers of the blast and the gum are mechanically separated, and then a contact area of the gum existing in the bast with the aqueous solution is increased, so that decomposition of the gum is promoted.
