Abstract:

PURPOSE: To simultaneously produce monochloroacetaldehyde trimer and chloral in a high yield without causing problems of waste water treatment by adding the chloral to a specific chlorinated solution, distilling the resultant mixture, subjecting the obtained fraction to the trimerization in the presence of a trimerization catalyst and chlorinating the residual fraction.

CONSTITUTION: Acetaldehyde or paraldehyde is chlorinated to provide a chlorinated solution consisting essentially of monochloroacetaldehyde. Chloral is then added to the resultant chlorinated solution and the obtained mixture is distilled to afford a fraction consisting essentially of monochloroacetaldehyde and the chloral. The obtained fraction reacts in the presence of a trimerization catalyst such as metallic tin to subject the monochloroacetaldehyde to the trimerization. The residual fraction is subsequently chlorinated and converted into the chloral. Thereby, the monochloroacetaldehyde trimer and chloral are simultaneously produced.
