Abstract:

PURPOSE: To improve the resistance of a structural member to the progress of cracking and to increase the strength of the member by irradiating a beam having high energy density on the cracked part of the member to harden locally the tip of the crack by heating to a specified temp.

CONSTITUTION: Laser light 12a emitted from a CO2 gas laser oscillator 11 is condensed with a condensing mirror 13 and irradiated on the cracked part 3 of the rising corner of the stepped part of a shaft 1 or the like to heat the part 3 to the A1 transformation point W the m.p., and the shaft 1 is rotated with a driving mechanism 14. By the heat treatment the part 3 is locally hardened. The energy and emission time of the laser light 12a and the speed and extent of rotation of the shaft 1 are controlled by a controller 15.
