PURPOSE: To detect and monitor variation of the structural member of bridge, tower, etc., by detecting an audible frequency and a lower frequency transmitted in response to a transient load being applied to a structural member, comparing both frequencies and determining the difference.
CONSTITUTION: A sensor 10 detects a sound existing in a structural member from a vibration interlocked with the motion of structural member and the range of sound is selected between au audible frequency and a lower frequency, i.e., approximately 0.1Hz-20kHz. A signal regulating section 21 receives a signal from the sensor 10 regulates the amplitude of a detected signal to a required level. A signal processing section 23 acquires a detected sound data in a form to be processed and performs a required measurement. Subsequently, a signal is transmitted through a field port 26, a remote measuring port 27 and a communication network 60 to a central monitoring station 30. Consequently, a remote structural member of highway bridge, for example, can be monitored at a central station.
