A protein polymer of a high molecular weight is prepared from a heme protein monomer represented by formula (I) or its salt. In the formula (I), R1, R2, R3, R4 each represents a lower alkyl group or a lower alkenyl group; Y represents a specific group; and X represents a variant of a heme protein.
