To obtain a washing machine employing an inverter motor in which an inertia rotation time of a motor can be reduced when power supply from an AC power supply is interrupted during the rotation of the motor, and the voltage of a DC power supply for driving the motor is prevented from rising.
Upon the interruption of power supply during the rotation of a motor 4, the voltage of a DC power supply comprising a capacitor 3 and driving the motor 4 is monitored by a voltage monitor 10. When the voltage lowers down to a predetermined level, the inertia rotation of the motor 4 is actuated by a control circuit 9 of an inverter 5 and power is regenerated from the motor 4 to the DC power supply. When a voltage of the DC power supply rises to a predetermined level, the motor 3 is braked by short-circuiting three phases thereof. An inertia rotation time of the motor 4 is reduced by repeating the operation and an undue increase in the DC power supply voltage of the capacitor 3 is prevented.
