To realize a motor drive device whose mechanical contacts used for shorting between motor coils of a synchronous motor for dynamic brakes have a long life, whose brake time is short, and whose structure is simple and low cost.
A motor drive device 1 comprises: an inverter 11 in which a plurality of semiconductor switching elements, each consisting of anti-parallel connected reflux diodes, are provided at an upper arm A and a lower arm B, and these semiconductor switching elements are turned on and off under control to convert a direct current to an alternating current; shorting means 12 which includes a selector switch opened and closed according to a directive between motor coils of a synchronous motor; and dynamic brake control means 13 which, when a dynamic brake start directive is received, exerts control so that all of the semiconductor switching elements on one of the upper arm A and the lower arm B are turned on and all of the semiconductor switching elements on the other arm are turned off, and further controls the shorting means 12 so as to close the selector switch, thereby generating deceleration torque for the synchronous motor 2.
