PURPOSE: To obtain the captioned copolymers free from remaining double bond in a short time with high conversion by preparing precursor polymers having substituted unsaturated groups through polymerization of conjugated diene, of which substituted sites are then epoxidized and are allowed to contact with specified compounds having hydroxyl groups.
CONSTITUTION: At least one conjugated diene is polymerized to prepare precursor polymers having remaining 1,2-di-substituted, 1,1-di-substituted, 1,1,2-tri- substituted or tetra-substitute olefinic unsaturations, the substituted sites of which are then epoxidized to form epoxy groups so that the amount of epoxy functionalized groups in the polymer are not less than 1 meq/g-polyme. The epoxidized polymers are then allowed to contact with either one of alcohols having one unprotected hydroxyl group and compounds of formula MXn (M is H, B, Al, Fe, Sn; X is halogen; (n) is an integer corresponding to the valency of M) or their organic complexes to obtain the intended block copolymers of conjugated dienes which contain hydroxyl groups in the diene blocks.
