PURPOSE: To obtain a new compound useful as a herbicide for controlling weeds causing problems in soil treatment and foliar treatment in upland field and water treatment in paddy field.
CONSTITUTION: This compound of formula I (R1 and R2 are H, 1-6C alkyl, etc.; R3 and R4 are 1-6C alkyl, 1-6C alkoxy or halogen; X is CH or N; Z is CH or N; W is O or S; Y1 to Y3 are H, halogen, etc.), e.g. 2-[(4,6- dimethoxy-1,3,5-triazin-2-yl)oxy]-1-(N,N-dimethylaminooxycarbonyl)naphthalene. The compound of formula I is obtained by reacting a naphthol derivative of formula II with a compound of formula III (W1 is halogen, 1-6C alkylsulfonyl or benzylsulfonyl) in the presence of a base (e.g. sodium hydride) in a solvent (e.g. N,N-dimethylformamide) at ambient temperature to the boiling point of the solvent. This compound is useful for weeds of the family Convolvulaceae, China jute, weeds of the family Violaceae, birdseye speedwell, wild amaranth, water nutgrass, Japan ribbon wapato, broad-leaved weeds, etc.
