To obtain a new hydroxyisothiocyanate compound useful as an intermediate for various kinds of medicines and agricultural chemicals and also having an antibacterial action and an antifungal action.

A compound of the formula: HO-R-NCS (R is a linear paraffin, a cycloparaffin, a heterogeneous compound or their substituted products), e.g. 6-isothlocyanato-1-hexanol. The compound is obtained by reacting a hydroxy primary amine of the formula: HO-R-NH2 or its salt with carbon disulfide and a base (e.g. triethylamine), if necessary, in a solvent (e.g. THF), and subsequently reacting the obtained dithiocarbamic acid of the formula (M is H, an alkali metal, ammonium) or its salt with hydrogen peroxide without isolating the compound of the formula. The carbon disulfide and the hydrogen peroxide are used in amounts of ≥1.0 equivalent and ≥1.0 equivalent, respectively, per equivalent of the amino group in the hydroxy primary amine.
