This nitrogen-containing heterocyclic compound can emit light or change color by light photoirradiation or the action of electric field and is represented by formula (I) (X1 and X2 are each an electron attractive group such as a cyano group or the like; rings Z1 and Z2 are each a hydrocarbon ring or a heterocycle (a benzene ring containing an electron donative group such as a hydroxy group, an alkoxy group, an amino group, an N-substituted amino group or the like or a condensed ring between a heterocycle containing a nitrogen atom as a hetero atom and a benzene ring). This organic EL element can be obtained by laying an organic layer containing the compound between a pair of electrodes.
