Abstract:

PURPOSE: To efficiently O-alkylate a phenolic compound by reacting the phenolic compound with an alkanol in gaseous phase using an effective amount of catalyst selected from trivalent rare earth metal orthophosphates.
CONSTITUTION: O-alkylation is carried out by reacting a phenolic compound with an alkanol in gaseous phase by which is selected from trivalent rare earth metal orthophosphates as a catalyst (particularly a lanthanum, a cerium or a samarium orthophosphate optionally doped with cesium is preferable). A catalyst calcined at high temperature particularly improves a conversion rate of phenol and a selectivity of reaction. The catalyst is also very stable and has long life. A compound of the formula (A is a monocyclic or polycyclic aromatic carbocyclic group or a residue of a bivalent group consisting of a chain of a monocyclic aromatic carbocyclic group; R are 1 or more substituted groups; n≤5) is appropriate as a phenol compound.
