PURPOSE: To oligomerize an olefin contained in a hydrocarbon mixture over an Ni catalyst by previously leading the mixture over a molecular sieve having a specified pore diameter to remove catalyst poisons therefrom.
CONSTITUTION: A 2-8C olefin (mixture) contained in a hydrocarbon mixture is passed over a molecular sieve having a pore diameter of 4-15 at 0-200°C and 1-200 bar (absolute), and then oligomerized at 0-200°C at 1-70 bar (absolute) over an Ni-containing catalyst. By passing the mixture over the molecular sieve, water, alcohols, nitrogen compounds, sulfur compounds, halogen compounds, polyunsaturated hydrocarbons, etc., which act as catalyst poisons can be removed, and the life of the catalyst can be prolonged. It is advantageous that the catalyst used is especially a fixed bed of a catalyst containing Ni, Si and Al.
