PURPOSE: To provide an optical recording medium and recording and reproducing method by which recording and reproducing of an optical disk having higher density than the recording density limited by optical resolution is possible, by using an optical absorbing material having such characteristics that even in a thin film state, the light transmittance increases before beginning decomposition and deterioration because of the relation with the wavelength of laser to be used.
CONSTITUTION: This optical disk consists of a polyolefin transparent substrate 101, and at least a light absorbing layer 102, aluminum reflecting film 103 and epoxyacrylate protective film 104. The light-absorbing layer 102 contains a material having such a property that the absorbance at the wavelength of the laser in the transient absorption spectrum in an excited state caused by absorption of laser light is smaller than that at the wavelength of the laser in the absorption spectrum in the ground state.
