To obtain the subject ferroelectric liquid crystal having good chemical and thermal stability, good solubility to common solvents, and good stability to electric field and electromagnetic radiation.
This compound is shown by formula I (A1 and A2 are each a crosslinkable mesophase-forming residue; A3 is an optically active mesophase- forming residue), e.g. {4-[4-(2-amino-5-nitro-4-[(S)-2-octyloxy]phenyl) benzoyloxy]phenyl}-methyl=2,5-bis[4-(6-acryloyloxyhexyloxy) phenylcarboxy]benzoate. The compound of formula I is pref. a compound wherein A1 and A2 are identical with each other, each being a group of formula II, and A3 is a group of formula III, i.e., a compound of formula IV (rings C, D, E, and F are each 1,4-phenylene, pyridin-2,5-diyl, trans-1,4-cyclohexylene or the like; G is 1,4-phenylene; R1 is a crosslinkable group; R2 is an optically active group; (n), (r), (s) and (o) are each 0 or 1; (m) and (p) are each 1-16).
