To provide an organic EL element and its manufacturing method capable of improving the yield of an organic EL panel without generating a short circuit or leakage between a transparent electrode and a back electrode.
This manufacturing method is used for manufacturing the organic EL element 1 composed by installing, on a translucent glass substrate (support substrate) 2, this organic EL element 7 composed by catching an organic layer 5 having at least a luminescent layer between the transparent electrode (positive electrode) 3 and the back electrode (negative electrode) 5. The manufacturing method has a voltage application process for sequentially stacking the transparent electrode 3, an insulation layer 3, the organic layer 5 and the back electrode 6 on the glass substrate 2, and thereafter separating a part where at least the back electrode 6 is in contact with the transparent electrode 3 from the transparent electrode 3 by applying a reverse bias voltage between both electrodes 3 and 6 in a nitrogen environment having a predetermined oxygen concentration.
