Abstract:

PURPOSE: To obtain an alcohol or a ketone under mild condition at a low cost by oxidizing the corresponding alkane with oxygen in the presence of a transition metal catalyst and an aldehyde.
CONSTITUTION: A 1-20C straight, branched or cyclic alkane is made to react with oxygen in the presence or absence of a proton source (preferably acetic acid or benzoic acid) and in the presence of a transition metal catalyst selected from chromium, manganese, iron, cobalt, nickel, copper, ruthenium and osmium- based catalysts, preferably iron-based catalyst or copper-based catalyst causing little environmental pollution and an aldehyde (preferably acetaldehyde, propionaldehyde, butanal or heptanal) to obtain an alcohol or ketone corresponding to the alkane.
