PURPOSE: To produce paper suitable for printing paper, writing paper, coated base paper, etc., with industrial advantage while improving the yield of a filler by adding the filler, a sizing agent and an amphoteric starch polyion complex to a pulp slurry and carrying out papermaking.

CONSTITUTION: A hardwood bleached craft pulp is used as pulp and a filter (e.g. light calcium carbonate), a sizing agent, (e.g. an alkyl ketene dimer) and an amphoteric starch polyion complex composed of a polyion complex of a cationic starch prepared by treatment starch with diethylaminoethyl chloride, 3-chloro-2-hydroxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride, 2,3- epoxypropyltrimethylammonium chloride, etc., oxidized starch, phosphated starch or maleic starch are added to the pulp slurry respectively in an amount of 30wt.%, 0.2wt.% and 0.3wt.% based on the dry weight of the pulp. The resultant mixture is subjected to papermaking, thus carrying out the objective papermaking while improving the yield of the filler.
