PURPOSE: To provide a new phenanthrene derivative having IL-1 inhibiting activity and useful for the treatment of chronic inflammatory diseases.
CONSTITUTION: This phenanthrene derivative is a compound selected from the compounds of formula I, formula II, formula III (R3 is H or methyl), formula IV, formula V (R4 is a lower alkanoyloxy; R2 is H, formyl or a lower alkanoyl) and formula VI (R3 and R6 each is a lower alkoxy) and its salt, e.g. 3, 4, 4a, 9, 10, 10a-hexahydro-5,8-dihydroxy-1,4a-dimethyl-7-(l-methylethyl)-2- phenanthrenecarboxylic acid. The compounds of formula II formula III and formula IV (R3 is methyl) in the above compounds can be produced by extracting Tripterygium wilfordii with a polar solvent such as methanol or ethanol, concentrating the extract under reduced pressure to obtain a primary extract and separating the primary extract by various processes taking advantage of the physical and chemical properties of the objective compound.
