To provide a plane illumination device that can simultaneously illuminate two illuminated objects by dividing light emitted from a light source device into halves, and a liquid crystal display device illuminated by the plane illumination device.
A prism light guide plate 1 has a light guide plate 11 and a light source device 12 provided in the vicinity of a light incident end surface 13 of the light guide plate 11 and is so constructed that light emitted from the light source device 12 and guided to the interior of the light guide plate 11 from the light incident end surface 13 is reflected on a prism array surface 14 provided in a serrated form intersecting a light-guiding direction of the light on one surface and emitted from the other flat surface 15. The light dividing member 2 is provided in a flat plate form in the vicinity of the flat surface 15 of the prism light guide plate 1, and is so constructed that part of light incident on one incident surface 21 is reflected, incident on the flat surface 15, and emitted from the prism array surface 14 to provide one illuminating light 3, and the residual light is transmitted and emitted from the other light emitting surface 22 to provide the other illuminating light 4.
