Abstract:

PURPOSE: To produce a polycrystalline diamond having high strength and dense texture suitable for the use in a field required to have high strength, e.g., material for machining tool, by depositing diamond on a substrate while applying vibration to the diffusion boundary layer of carbon on the surface of the substrate.

CONSTITUTION: Diamond is deposited on a substrate by a vapor-phase synthesis comprising the activation of a gaseous mixture composed mainly of an organic carbon compound (preferably a compound forming methyl radical by decomposition because the carbon generated from the radical is liable to take a diamond structure) with plasma discharge, etc., by thermionic emission, high-frequency radiation or microwave radiation. In the above process, the deposition of diamond is performed while applying a vibration to the diffusion boundary layer of carbon on the surface of the substrate, e.g., by mechanically vibrating the substrate using supersonic vibration. A dense and high-strength polycrystalline diamond can be produced by this process and the product is especially suitable as various tools such as cutting tools, drilling tool or dresser.
