Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain the title substance usable as vegetable growth requlators, fungicides, medicines, or an intermediate for preparing them, in high yield, by subjecting a specific substance to methylation, mesylation, epoxidation, and reduction.
CONSTITUTION: 2-Deoxy-α-D-erythro-hexopyranoside-3-ulose derivative is reacted with methyltriphenyl bromide and butyllithium to form a methylene derivative, and oxidized with a peracid to give an epoxy derivative, which is reduced to afford a 2-deoxy-3-C-methyl-α-D-arabino-hexopyranoside derivative. Alternatively, 3-C- methyl-α-D-glyco-hexopyranoside derivative is mesylated with a methanesulfonyl halide, epoxidized with an alcoholate then reduced to give the objective compound.
