PURPOSE: To obtain the title compound useful as a raw material for polyimide resins, by dehydrogenating and dimerizing an aromatic compound in the presence of molecular oxygen, a palladium catalyst, and an alicylic β-diketone and/or specific cation exchange resin.
CONSTITUTION: An aromatic compound having a benzene nucleus, e.g. benzene having unsubstituted or 1W4, preferably 1W2, substitutents, is dehydrogenated and dimerized in the presence of molecular oxygen, an organic palladium salt, e.g. palladium acetate, and an alicylic β-diketone (5W20C, preferably 5W10C, alicyclic hydrocarbon, e.g. cyclopentanedione-1,3), and/or a weakly acidic carboxy-type cation exchange resin, e.g. carboxylated styrene, methacrylic, or phenolic resin, under pressure to give a biphenyl in high yield and selectivity.
