To obtain a cycloolefin copolymer having high tear strength while performing the reaction in high activity by copolymerizing a cyclic olefin with an acyclic olefin in the presence of a catalyst containing a specified metallocene compound.
The catalyst used is a metallocene compound represented by formula I (wherein L and L' are each a π-ligand; T is a group through which L and L' are bridged; M is a tetravalent transition metal; (m) is 1 or 2; an R1 to R4 are each H or a 1-20C hydrocarbon group) an is exemplified by bis(dimethylamido) [η5:η5-2,2-(cyclopentadienyl) (indenyl)propylidene]zirconium. The promoter used is exemplified by an aluminoxane. The metallocene compound is used in a concentration of 10-3 to 10-8mol (in terms of the transition metal atoms) per dm3 of the solvent, and the aluminoxane is used in a concentration of 10-6 to 10-1mol per dm3 of the solvent. The olefin mixture to be polymerized comprises at least one cyclic olefin, desirably a polycyclic olefin (e.g. norbornene) and at least one acyclic olefin (e.g a 1-40C 1-olefin).
