Abstract:
PURPOSE: To obtain an indigo useful as a dye industrially through a simple process, by oxidizing a 3-formylindole into a dimer in the presence of a peroxide.
CONSTITUTION: One mole of a 3-formylindole is reacted with preferably 1W3 moles of a peroxide, e.g., hydrogen peroxide, in an organic solvent, e.g., methanol. The reaction product thus obtained is dimerized by oxidation through a gas containing molecular oxygen in the presence of 0.05W2 moles based on one mole of the indole of a basic compound, preferably sodium hydroxide.
